La Chica Chic is a brand based out of California, made in Brazil, and it first caught my eye at Rooms15 in Roppongi. Talk about globalization. After meeting the super-cool sales and design crew, I've been lurking around and scanning the news bytes for any mentions of the luxe brand.
And sure enough, hard work pays off.
The cross-country's piece titled 'Sophie' has earned La Chica a finalist spot for the Independent Handbag Designer Award, and will be getting the star treatment here in New York City with a special display at Henri Bendel. The organic patent-leather beauty is up for the category of Most Socially Responsible Handbag, which is given only to those special purses that are born cruelty-and-sweatshop-free, and--according to the competition's sponsor HandbagDesigner101--"have impacted the local culture of the country of manufacturing".
To the designer, Christine Valdez, I say kudos for the Crafting-With-A-Conscious.
